BMS vs BAS — What's the Difference?

The Engine and the Whole Car The engine and gearbox do the actual driving. But the whole car — dashboard, gauges, the driver managing the journey — is more than the engine. BAS is the engine that automates the plant. BMS is the whole managed vehicle around it. They are overlapping circles, not opposites. Two Layers ``` BAS Building Automation System the CONTROL layer: sensors, controllers, actuators automates HVAC, lighting, plant sequences BMS Building Management System the MANAGEMENT layer around BAS: monitoring, trending, alarms, reporting, integration ``` Where They Meet ``` Small project 'BMS' and 'BAS' often mean the same install Large project BAS = automation; BMS = supervisory platform tying many systems together ``` One controls the plant; the other manages the building around it — not rivals, but layers.
