How the Telephone Grew Up The telephone went from a hand-worked switchboard to the dial, to push-button, to mobile, to the smartphone — each step because the last one hit a limit. Building automation grew the same way, era by era, and the legacy panel on your site is simply an earlier phone still doing its job. Each era arrived because the previous technology hit a wall.
